Spotlight on Memory Semiconductors: Market and Technology Trends

Date: Thursday, February 25
Time: 1 pm EST

Memory semiconductors are a foundational and important subsegment of the semiconductor market.  Indeed, memory chips are required in virtually all electronic products.  According to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics program, in 2020, global sales of memory tied for the largest single share of any subproduct at 27 percent of the total market.  But memory is not one single monolithic product.  There are various types of memory technologies such as DRAM, NAND and NOR flash, and SRAM, that help enable a variety of end use technologies in different ways, as well as next generation memory products in development.

Please join a panel of industry experts for a conversation on current and future trends in the memory market as well as advances in memory technology.  Panelists include: Craig Stice, Chief Analyst at Omdia; Dr. Rainer Hoehler, Vice President and GM, Flash Solutions at Infineon Technologies; and Dr. Thomas Boone, Vice President for Defense and Aerospace at Spin Memory. The session will be moderated by Falan Yinug, Director of Industry Statistics and Economy Policy at SIA.

Presentations:

High Volume – Mainstream Memory
Craig Stice, Omdia

Infineon Memory Solutions – When Failure is not an Option
Rainer Hoehler, PhD, Infineon Technologies LLC

Accelerating MRAM for Strategic Applications
Thomas Boone, PhD, Spin Memory, Inc.

Panelists

Craig Stice
Chief Analyst
Omdia

As part of the memory research team at Omdia, Craig focuses on the worldwide NAND industry. Craig’s research provides detailed analysis of NAND manufacturing, technology trends, as well as application demand drivers to create an overall view of the current NAND supply/demand environment and the outlook.

Craig began his career as an analyst with IHS Markit (now Omdia) in 2012. Prior to that, Craig spent 16 years at Micron Technology working in product marketing and business development. Craig holds a Bachelor of Arts from Boise State University, Idaho.

Rainer Hoehler, PhD
Vice President and GM, Flash Solutions
Infineon Technologies LLC

Rainer Hoehler is the Vice President and General Manager of Flash Solutions at Infineon. He led the integration of the former Spansion memory business into Cypress and later into Infineon, establishing leadership in NOR solutions for high-performance, high-reliability, and high-density NOR business in applications where failure is not an option. During his more than 20 years in the memory industry, Dr. Hoehler developed and managed various semiconductor memory businesses across different memory types such as DRAM, Ferroelectric RAM, nonvolatile-SRAM, NAND-Flash and NOR-Flash.

Thomas Boone, PhD
Vice President for Defense and Aerospace
Spin Memory, Inc.

Thomas Boone is Vice President for Defense and Aerospace at Spin Memory, Inc. in Fremont, CA.  He joined Spin Memory in 2014 and has held director level positions in nanofabrication, photolithography, test and reliability before transitioning to his current role in managing the company’s HiRel product business for military and space applications.  Currently his team is developing strategic rad-hard memory products for the U.S. DoD and space industry.  Before joining Spin Memory, Tom was a lead technologist for the optoelectronic development of Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording at HGST, a Western Digital Company.  Previously, he spent 5 years building and managing the photovoltaic device design and testing team at the thin film solar power company SoloPower.  Prior to this period, he was a Research Staff Member at Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, where his contributions resulted in three separate world record recording areal density demonstrations for hard disk drive technology.  He has spent over a decade within the magnetic data memory and storage industry and has over 25 patents and 30 peer reviewed journal articles.
